What the mod does
ATG Translator adds a single item: a handheld translation device. Hold one, hand a second to the person you want to talk to, and the two of you can speak to each other at conversational range.
It exists so that talking to a civilian or a prisoner is something a player does in the world rather than something arranged out of character. The device has to be carried, handed over, and switched to — all of which take time and put you in the open.
Using it
- Take a translation device into a gadget slot.
- Give a second device to the person you want to talk to.
- Select the translator in your radio menu.
Both parties need a device, and both need it selected. Range is short — a few metres — so you have to actually stand with them.
Fitting it into your server
The device is an ordinary inventory item, so you can place it anywhere you would place any other gadget:
- Arsenal — add it to an arsenal catalogue in a mod of your own so players can draw it on deploy.
- Game Master — place it by hand from the content browser during an operation.
- Loadout — put it in a character loadout so a role, such as an interpreter, always carries one.
Nothing needs configuring, and there are no settings.
Arma Reforger 1.8 stops it working
On 1.8 this mod does not function, and there is nothing you can configure to make it work. If you are running 1.8, do not add it to your server expecting it to do anything.
1.8 changed radio delivery so that a transmission only arrives when a relay carrying the same encryption key is in range of the person speaking, and the listener is in range of that same relay. The translator’s own transceiver reaches about five metres, which means no relay placed anywhere on a map can serve a pair of translators standing somewhere else — the device can only ever transmit while it is within a few metres of the relay itself.
No relay works around this. A relay only ever serves the few metres of ground it
stands on, so a TranslatorRelay still placed in your own world is doing nothing and can
be deleted.
Bohemia have confirmed the 1.8 relay behaviour is a bug. 1.8.0.13 lists a fix for “Radio would not work sometimes”, and it does not restore this device — measured on 2026-09-04, two devices side by side with no relay of their own in range still deliver nothing, exactly as on 1.8.0.10. The mod is waiting on a later fix rather than being rebuilt around behaviour that is going to change.
Everything above the 1.8 line still describes what the device does and how it is meant to be used, and none of it needs changing when delivery starts working again.
